I think NVIDIA drivers have been screwed up just from apt-get upgrade (8/17 and 11/17). Perhaps this process can overwrite the xorg configuration that the Nvidia installer injects.

Can be installed via apt from non-free (avoid unless the proprietary drivers don't work), but this is version 340 (stretch: 375 (8/17)) whereas NVidia offer version 367 384 (8/17).

Latest version

Install as root after stopping x with service gdm stop. The installer will offer to rewrite your xorg config; do it.

Old version via non-free (not recommended, although it sounds like they are getting to be more up-to-date in stretch):
